U17 "Question Time" - 1st February (22/01/2008-02/02/2008)

In a format similar to the BBC’s “Question Time” Buckingham Rugby Club (U17) are staging “Question and Answer Time” at the Radcliffe Centre (former church, Church St, Buckingham) on Friday 1st February 2008. Starting at 7.30 (sharp) the event will be Chaired by Criminologist Professor David Wilson with a panel that includes; Grant Seely of Northampton Saints, Media Psychologist Jenni Trent-Hughes, John Bercow MP, leading heart surgeon Mr Tim Graham and Educationalist Chris Woodhead. Tickets cost £15 and includes a cheese and wine supper.

Tickets are available from Julian Cook (email: julian.cook@jrconsulting.com) or by calling 07731 900 477.

The panellists are:

- Jenni Trent-Hughes was born in Jamaica and lived in the USA for many years. She now spends most of her time in the UK where she is well known as a life coach, body language expert and agony aunt. She is particularly well known from her appearances on Big Brother’s Little Brother, Loose Women and Grumpy Old Women, and most recently appeared on BBC2’s Identity with Donny Osmond. She was the agony aunt for handbag.com for three years, but has since left to set up her own site called teaandabiscuit.com

- John Bercow is MP for Buckingham – a constituency that he has represented since May 1997. His current majority is 18,129. A graduate of the University of Essex, he was the National Chairman of the Federation of Conservative Students, 1986-1987, and has been a front bench spokesman on Education and Home Affairs. In 2005 he was Channel 4’s “Opposition MP of the Year”, and supported the reduction of the age of consent for gay men to 16. In 2007 he accepted an Advisory Post on a Government review to consider the educational needs of children with speech and language difficulties.

- Tim Graham is consultant cardiac surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and an honorary senior Lecturer at Birmingham University. A noted speaker and author, his work is rarely out of the news, and most recently he has been candid about the quality of medical treatment given to soldiers injured in Iraq. A passionate rugby fan, Tim endeared himself to BRUFC by being willing to carry the first aid kit at the U17’s matches and memorably lectured the Bicester St John’s Ambulance crew about first aid!

- Grant Seely played 251 times for Northampton Saints, scoring 61 tries in the process. He attended Aylesbury Grammar School, but hopes that that won’t be held against him. Such was his contribution the Saints that he was awarded a Benefit Year in 2006 and is now in charge of the club’s academy which manages players aged 16-18. Grant claimed in an interview that “rugby is the ultimate team game”, and recently appeared naked in a calendar to raise money for a charity supported by the club.

- Chris Woodhead is a graduate of Bristol University and was formerly a lecturer at Oxford and held posts in three LEAs before becoming Chief Inspector of schools 1994-2000. He is now Professor of Education at Buckingham University and Chairman of Cognita. As Chief Inspector of Schools he famously championed “traditional teaching methods and values” and claimed that there were “15,000 incompetent teachers”. Chris argues that Cognita “want what concerned parents have always wanted: teachers who care about the subjects that they teach and the children for whom they are responsible.”

It's official Benedict O'Hallaron is MAD!!!! (03/12/2007-07/01/2008)

Alcatraz – the famous prison, built for its position across the frigid waters from the shore of San Francisco. Home, allegedly, to stingers and sharks. Home, most definitely, to strong currents and 11 degrees Celsius water in winter….which is when he plans to swim from the Prison to the city shoreline, all in the aid of charity. Just Benedict, in a wetsuit, with a man in a boat beside him to give directions, on Sunday January 6th 2008 at 0800hrs. Must be a bit light up top I reckon!!

Fundraising for the Club (03/12/2007-23/12/2007)

Buckingham Rugby Club is going through some major changes. The pitches are now ‘up there with the best in Bucks’ as a Ref. said a few weeks ago, and there are still more major changes to come. We are applying for grants where we can, but over the next 12 months the Club needs to raise £100,000. This money will go towards developing the club house and more land for pitches. If we are to achieve this we are going to need the support of the whole Club and more. For a club that has 800 Adults associated to it , with players, mini’s and juniors parents, coaches, VP’s this should be easy! If 10 people were able to donate £5000 we would be half way there! Now is the time to dig deep and pay back The Club that has put so much into so many peoples lives, to ensure it is here for our future Generations. No matter how much you can give whether it be time or money now would be the best time to commit.

Over the next 12 months we will be organising many fund raising activities.

The first of these events will the Quiz Night on 14th December.

Pitch Opening - Chairman's Thanks (02/09/2007-16/09/2007)

What a fantastic event.

Great weather, though too hot for some !!, huge crowed, great company, and enjoyed by all.

We could not have wished for a better day, and although the Legends finished close runners up they gave a great hard fought game to our victorious first team.

Thanks must go to Jean and Rico for the pre match buffet, Mike Cook for spending the day roasting himself between two barbeques and living to tell the tale, and Julie Nichols for her sterling work running the bar, our guests for confirming in their short speeches what a great club Buckingham is, and Sue Bartlett for cutting the ribbon.

For those of you who missed the day as many were on holiday, I’ve enclosed the match programme. If you look at the team sheets, I’m sure you will agree that all players, both 1st XV and the Legends were worthy of their shirts for the day.

Let’s continue the support shown on Sunday and get behind our boys on the touch line every Saturday throughout the forthcoming season.

See You There

Mark Blackwell.
Chairman BRUFC

BRUFC Golf Day Results - 10th August (22/08/2007-31/08/2007)

Another tremendous day was had with 22 players in all contesting. The morning began with Nibbler arriving for an all male golfing day with his new Venezuelan beauty who followed him around the course for the day ; obvisously he didn't get much grief ! Comment of the day, over lunch, when asking Nibblers missus where they had met to which she replied ' at Euston Station ' only to get an immediate response from Tojo ' that's funny, Nibbler normally picks up his women at King's Cross !' Due to Niblers behaviour it was deemed correct that he wear the frock he won at the previous function for the morning round; god did he look mighty fine!

The Texas scramble in the morning was won by a team including our very own Mr Haine and Johnny Lambert as well as 2 guests of mine.

The PM stableford competition unfortunately was won by me and much punishment was given in the form of alcoholic beverages throughout the night.

Longest drive was won by Henry Colver, who it was stated kicked the ball a further 40 yds when out of eyeshot ; his drive was some 350 yds ! Nearest the pin won by a guest , Ian Jenkins.

Most ladylike golfer of the day was won by Andrew Jackson who was awarded with the much desired frock releasing Nibbler from the ties, although I'm sure he will win it again !

During the round Mr Neil Smith had thought an animal had been seen loose from Woburn as a park ranger was seen on the course , however after investigation it was found to be Ganny , neatly dressed in a fetching rangers outfit he had won at a Woburn Safari Park charity function !

Many thanks for all who attended , these days are great fun and I hope to arrange more over the next 12 months. The intention is to have a Festive event a week or so before Xmas which will be followed by a 3 course Xmas Lunch/Dinner , port , cheese and general evening activities; probable date for diaries Friday 14th December.

Buckingham Rugby Club will enter into a new chapter in its life this forthcoming season with new Director of Rugby Adam Izzard and Coach Ben Wilson taking over the mantle from the outgoing Steve Malling. Both new coaches have very much been part of the life at the club for nine years now as players, captain (Ben Wilson 2002-2005) and acting coach (Adam Izzard) since both joining the Royal Latin School as PE teachers in 1998. Ben has since moved on to become the Head of PE at Waddesdon School whilst Adam is now the Director of Learning for PE at the Latin. Between them they have almost 200 league caps and have been through the ups and downs that the club have experienced in league and cup campaigns. They were both part of the Bucks Cup Final team that went down to the formidable Marlow in 2002.

In terms of coaching the senior sides at Buckingham their emphasis will be on extremely high fitness levels combined with superb basic skills. The first of their coaching sessions will be on Tuesday 3rd July at the Royal Latin School from 7.15-9.00pm. These sessions will then run on every Thursday and Tuesday thereafter. Under 17’s through to 1stXV players will be expected to attend these sessions and anyone else in the local area who wants to give it a go. Quiz Night in aid of Matt Hampson - 25 April (19/03/2007-27/04/2007)

Dear All

There are a bunch of guys walking from the Wasps to the Leicester Tigers ground to raise money for Matt Hampson. For those of you who have not heard of Matt Hampson you can read more here http://www.sportnetwork.net/main/s245/st111131.htm but in a nutshell he was rendered paralysed from a collapsed scrum whilst playing rugby for England U21’s. He is confined to a wheelchair and he requires a ventilator to breathe. He can now speak and move his neck and shoulders but remains effectively paralysed from the neck down. He requires 24-hour care, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The walkers will stop overnight at various rugby grounds along their way and they are stopping at Buckingham Rugby Club on Wednesday 25th April.

We have organised a Quiz Night to take place in the evening at the Club to raise more funds for this cause. It also gives us a chance to put some money over our bar and have some midweek fun into the bargain, whilst reflecting how lucky we all are that we have played rugby without anything serious having befallen us.

So, please come and support Matt Hampson and Buckingham Rugby Club at this Quiz Night. There is a flyer attached but you can enter a team of 4 for just £10 and this includes food. The bar will obviously be open. The evening starts at 1930hrs and it would be great to get as many of us there as possible. Don’t feel you have to raise a team to join in – give me some notice and we can make some teams up on the night. Remember, the more the merrier!

Please contact me on the numbers and email below to enter or if you have any further questions.

Benedict.

Hawks win county cup (12/03/2007-31/03/2007)

BUCKINGHAM under-13s Hawks captured the county cup final on Sunday with a thrilling 5-0 victory over Amersham & Chiltern.
Underdogs Hawks produced their best performance of the season to run out impressive winners in appalling weather conditions.
Playing a pressure game from the start, Hawks never allowed the opposition to settle and a stunning try by wing Adam Clarke late in the second half sealed victory.
Hawks' pack produced an outstanding display of controlled play with No.8 James Clark and lock Josh Coxhill dominating the line-out and props James Barker and Will Kinman producing a solid platform in the scrum.
With wing forwards Jordan Garratt and Toby Baker giving Amersham no space throughout, the opposition were unable to penetrate the wall of Hawks' shirts.
Behind the scrum, captain Edmund Robins, wing Tim Kingston and full back Brodie Smith were outstanding.

Given that late Feb and early March are a bit of a wash out, the overall
average can only increase !
So let's not be over critical of the two new pitches ....if we give them
a day to drain after a deluge they ARE basically ok, and after a couple
of days to dry out we are playing again on a good surface ...not the
traditional BRUFC mudbath. So it is working !

But it is important we do not play on it when it is particularly wet ;
being on clay soil it takes time to drain.
So please look out for and follow the e-mails sent out by Eric Curtis
(Club Groundsman) when the weather is wet regarding what pitches can be
played on and when over a weekend - his decision is the one that counts.

PS The wet patch behind Pitch 2 goal line is due to the drains not
extending into this corner. This was due to the Contractors not
completing the work in this corner after the hold ups caused by us
having to move BT underground cables. They acknowledge this was their
error and this will be fixed, at their expense, once the season is
finished.

Captains gripe......... (06/02/2007-06/03/2007)

Guys, do us a favour....... If you are sent a text/email asking for availability or confirming details for match days please do the decent thing and reply! Captains are having to spend far too much time (&money) having to chase people 3 or 4 times before they get an answer. This isn't aimed at everyone but you know who you are!!!

3rds Win Golden Boot, losses for 1st's and Vets (11/12/2006-18/12/2006)

The result of the weekend went to the 3rds who beat Winslow 15-7 (something like that anyway!) Not sure who scored though! This result meant the Golden Boot was returned to it's rightful place following last years dubious handover! The 1sts went down 14-5 to MK which now leaves them sitting precariously above the drop zone. This weeks game against relegation rivals Chipping Norton could now be the most important of the season. The Vets had their first outing of the season and despite having a weakened side they only narrowly lost to Bletchley 12-7, Bursey got the try with captain Norman converting.(Huge thanks must go to Bletchley for the loan of 3 players) The return fixture against Bletchley will be on 20th Jan so all vets please put this date in the diary.
